It is situated at the top of a rocky outcrop at the summit of the Kehlstein near the town of Berchtesgaden. The road from Obersalzberg (formerly Hitler's home and southern headquarters) to the Eagle's Nest at 1,834m is a feat of engineering. The Eagle's Nest remained untouched by the bombing of Allied Forces during WWII.
