At Select School Travel, we know that successful educational tours are built on more than great destinations. They rely on expert planning, trusted local knowledge, and a commitment to providing safe and meaningful learning experiences for every student.

Over the past year, we have strengthened our Italian operations team by bringing three experienced Italian specialists into the business. Their role was to review our existing Rome programme, identify new opportunities for schools, and ensure our offering continues to deliver the highest levels of educational value, quality and support.

As part of this process, I recently joined one of our newest team members, Giuseppe, on a research visit to Rome. Together, we reviewed accommodation, logistics, excursions and dining options to ensure our programme remains one of the strongest available to UK schools.

Educational travel allows students to engage with subjects in a way that simply isn’t possible within school walls. Whether standing in the chambers where political decisions are made, exploring the streets that inspired great literary works, or examining priceless artefacts in a museum, students gain valuable context and perspective.

These experiences help learners connect theory with reality, making lessons more memorable and meaningful.

The trip reinforced an important principle: local expertise makes a significant difference.

Rome is one of Europe’s most rewarding educational destinations. It offers students the opportunity to explore the history of the Roman Empire, experience world-renowned art and architecture, and gain a deeper understanding of religion, politics and culture. For subjects including History, Classics, Religious Studies and Art, there are few destinations that offer such a rich connection to classroom learning.

However, creating a successful school tour involves much more than arranging visits to famous landmarks.

Teachers need confidence that every aspect of the trip has been carefully considered. Safety, accommodation quality, transport arrangements and group logistics are all crucial factors in delivering a positive experience for both students and staff.

During our visit, we assessed a range of accommodation options that meet these priorities. Among the highlights were Hotel Cilicia, offering excellent access to Rome’s major attractions and valuable coach parking facilities, and the recently refurbished Hotel Pacific, ideally located near the Metro network and Vatican Museums.

We were also pleased to add Meininger Roma Termini to our programme. Already a trusted partner through our ski operations, the property offers modern facilities, excellent dining arrangements and a central location that works particularly well for educational groups.

One of the most distinctive discoveries was Palazzo Palazzola, a former monastery that provides a unique cultural experience alongside comfortable group accommodation. Its peaceful setting and historical significance make it an especially attractive option for schools seeking a deeper connection to the region’s heritage.

Beyond accommodation, our Italian team has reviewed educational visits, restaurant choices and operational arrangements across the city. Every decision is guided by the same objective: creating enriching experiences that maximise learning opportunities while ensuring trips run smoothly and safely.

We understand that organising overseas visits places considerable responsibility on teachers. That’s why Select School Travel provides comprehensive support throughout the planning process, helping schools manage logistics, meet safety requirements and deliver memorable educational outcomes.

Rome continues to be one of the most inspiring destinations available to UK school groups. It brings history, culture and learning to life in a way that few cities can match.

Our investment in local expertise reflects Select School Travel’s ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional educational travel experiences. By combining specialist knowledge with rigorous planning and a focus on safety, we continue to provide schools with the confidence that every tour will be both educationally valuable and truly unforgettable.
