Olympic Stadium, Berlin

What you’ll experience: The Olympic Stadium was originally built for the 1936 Summer Olympics by Werner March and is today part of the Olympiapark Berlin. The 1936 Berlin Games are remembered for Hitler’s failed attempt to use them to prove to the world their belief in the Master Race – as it turned out, the hero of the Games was the African-American sprinter and long jumper Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relay and long jump.

Select Says: You can view the grounds on your own, or there is the option of a tour guide to inform you about the German architectural and sports history of the Olympiastadion and the Olympiapark.

What you’ll experience: A one hour boat trip on the River Spree in Berlin is a great way to get to know the city. The cruise will take you past sights including the Reichstag, Museum Island and the historic Nikolai Quarter.

Select Says: There is also a 1 and a half hour tour possible which offers a view of the entire city – starting at Charlottenburg Palace in the west ending at Alexanderplatz in the east.

What you’ll experience: This is a fantastic hands-on museum and the only one in Berlin to focus on everyday life in the former East Germany. The DDR Museum provides stimulation for all the senses by entering a reproduction high-rise tower block housing estate, on the scale 1:20, visitors are invited to open cupboards, rummage through drawers, drive a Trabi simulator and touch and feel a number of exhibits.

What you’ll experience: Situated just south of the Brandenburg Gate the evocative Holocaust Memorial, has 2711 grey concrete slabs, or stelae. They are identical in their horizontal dimensions, differing vertically from 8 eight inches to more than 15 feet tall.

Select Says: The information centre is at the site’s eastern edge and is divided into rooms dedicated to personal aspects of the tragedy, for example the letters thrown from the trains that transported people to the death camps.

What you’ll experience: The only remaining city gate of Berlin, it formerly represented the separation of the city between East and West. Since the Wall came down in 1989, the Brandenburg Gate has come to symbolise German unity.

What you’ll experience: The Reichstag is the most famous landmark in Berlin and seat of the German Parliament. Between 1994 and 1999 it was redesigned and expanded by the British architect Sir Norman Foster as a modern Parliament building while retaining its historical dimensions. Guided tours suitable for children are available on request. The glass dome has spectacular views of the parliamentary district and Berlin’s sights.

What you’ll experience: Permanent exhibitions at the museum are dedicated to the history and life of German Jews. A variety of artefacts from both past and more recent history can be viewed, and students will get a sense of how Jews in Germany have reacted to their history through art. In addition the interior features a windowless Holocaust Tower. It is possible for school groups to take themed tours.

East Side Gallery Find out more

East Side Gallery

Subject Range: Art & Design

What you’ll experience: This is a public space and is a conserved graffiti project by 118 artists covering 0.8-mile of the Berlin Wall. Created in 1990 in celebration of the Wall’s collapse, the Gallery features works by an international group of artists who expressed their reactions to the November 9, 1989 event in paintings along a section of the Wall.

Select Says: Restoration works in 2009 renewed much of the Gallery for the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Berlin Wall.
