Excursion Ideas

Naples Underground – Napoli Sotterranea Find out more

Naples Underground – Napoli Sotterranea

Subject Range: Cultural
What you’ll experience: A system of ancient caverns forty metres below historic Naples with walls of yellow tufa stone (the stone with which the city was built). The first excavations of the underground caves took place around 5,000 years ago and various historical events, from the foundation of Neopolis, to the bombs of WWII, have left their mark.
Select Says: Make sure students take a sweater as it is colder underground!

Pompeii

Subject Range: Cultural, Geography
What you’ll experience: Pompeii is one of the most significant proofs of Roman civilization. The thick layer of volcanic material which submerged it, made up to a large extent of ash and lapilli, solidified into extremely hard stone meaning that the city has remained intact, not just buildings but also the contents of houses and shops which provide an absolutely fascinating picture of daily life from that era.
Select Says: The site has minimal shade, so it’s important for students to bring sunscreen, a hat and water.

Vesuvius

Subject Range: Cultural, Geography
What you’ll experience: Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79 killing thousands of people in the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. A hike up Mount Vesuvius will give you amazing views into the crater, and on a clear day, spectacular views out to the Bay of Naples.
Select Says: For pre-tour/post-tour why not read an eyewitness account with your students – see the letters of Pliny the Younger to the Historian Tacitus, where he describes the eruption and the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder while trying to rescue survivors of the early stages of the eruption. Available here .

Capri

Subject Range: Cultural, Geography
What you’ll experience: Capri is an island with great natural beauty, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea. A boat trip around Capri will allow a close up view of the cliffs, caves and fissures of the coastline or it is possible to take a minibus tour of the island which will take you from Capri town to Anacapri.
Select Says: A visit by boat to the Blue Grotto sea cave is also possible – there, sunlight passes through an underwater cavity and shines through the water creating a stunning illuminating blue reflection.

Sorrento

Subject Range: Cultural
What you’ll experience: There is plenty to explore in this picturesque town. Sorrento’s historical centre is the ideal place to start. From the seafront to the narrow streets leading to the main street area you can find typical hand-crafted marquetry, hand-stitched tablecloths, coloured handmade sandals, distilleries and local gastronomic products. Take a walk to one of Sorrento’s most beautiful churches, Chiesa di San Francesco, located next to the Villa Communale Park – this is one of Sorrento’s most beautiful churches. A visit to Villa Communale provides a gorgeous panorama of the Bay of Naples from which you can see Marinas Piccola and San Francisco below and Mt. Vesuvius across the bay.
Select Says: If time allows, to get a feel for Sorrento’s history take a walk down Via Pietà from Piazza Tasso where you will pass two medieval palaces en route to the cathedral.
