Cologne

Subject Range: MFL, Cultural
What you’ll experience: Cologne is Germany’s fourth-largest city and is located on both sides of the Rhine River. There is much to see and we would recommend a walking tour of the city’s famous and beautiful Gothic Cathedral and the charming historical Old Town. Many sights are concentrated within a square kilometre of the Cathedral, the town hall and the old town with the Romanesque church of Groß St. Martin. Explore the narrow, cobble-stoned alleys of the Old Town and the busy squares like the Roncalliplatz, the Heumarkt or the Alter Markt.
Select Says: You can also discover many monuments and fountains in Cologne’s Old Town, including the Heinzelmännchen fountain, home of the Cologne elves who legend says did all the work for the people of Cologne during the night, so that they could be lazy during the day.

Cologne Christmas Markets

Subject Range: MFL, Cultural
What you’ll experience: Each winter, Cologne transforms into a festive wonderland as the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine drifts through the air. The city’s famous Christmas markets — set against the backdrop of the majestic Cologne Cathedral — offer over 100 wooden stalls brimming with handmade crafts, ornaments, and regional treats. Wander through twinkling squares, sip Glühwein under sparkling lights, and enjoy live music that brings the holiday spirit to life. From the romantic Old Town market to the quirky Harbour Market by the Rhine, Cologne’s Christmas celebrations capture the true magic of the season.

Cologne Chocolate Museum

Subject Range: MFL, Cultural
What you’ll experience: Perched on the banks of the Rhine, the Cologne Chocolate Museum (Schokoladenmuseum Köln) takes visitors on a delicious journey through 5,000 years of chocolate history. From ancient Mayan cocoa rituals to modern-day production, the museum blends education and indulgence in equal measure. Watch pralines being crafted in the glass-walled factory, stroll through a tropical greenhouse filled with real cocoa trees, and dip a wafer into the flowing chocolate fountain. With interactive exhibits, a riverside café serving decadent desserts, and a shop brimming with sweet souvenirs, it’s a must-visit attraction for chocolate lovers of all ages.

Cologne Cathedral

Subject Range: Cultural, History, Religious Studies
What you’ll experience: Soaring over the city with its twin Gothic spires, Cologne Cathedral is Germany’s iconic landmark. Marvel at its intricate stonework, vibrant stained glass, and the famed Shrine of the Three Kings, or climb up for panoramic views of Cologne and the Rhine. A must-see symbol of history, faith, and architectural grandeur.
